Why Global Inflation Is Still Not Under Control?

If you’re like most consumers, you’ve probably noticed that your grocery bill continues to rise even when purchasing the same items. The same can be said about gas, rent, and other basic services, which seem more expensive than they were a couple of years ago. If you think about it now, you realize you are not imagining it. Inflation has been one of the biggest economic challenges in the world. Despite all the governments and central banks trying to get it under control, inflation still has not been completely corrected.

Inflation is similar to a stubborn fever; it gets better, then it returns and becomes worse than before. Why is it happening so long after it started? Why hasn’t there been a solution for this problem? Let me explain this to you in regular, simple language.

What Is Inflation In Simple Terms?

Basically, inflation is when prices go up over the long run (i.e., it costs you more money to get something). Your money also loses value over time, assuming you spend the same amount of money tomorrow as you spend today.

For example, let’s say you used to have enough for two grocery bags’ worth of ingredients in your monthly grocery allowance but now only have enough for one and a half grocery bags’ worth of food. That’s inflation! Inflation applies to all goods and services, not just luxury goods (e.g., cars), so it will affect everything from food to fuel to housing to transportation.

The Pandemic’s Long-Lasting Impact

The global economy was severely disrupted by the COVID-19 global pandemic. There were numerous business closures, production stoppages by manufacturers, and the loss of millions of jobs. To prevent an economic collapse, governments printed and spent large sums of money to assist their citizens and businesses.

The assistance sustained the lives of many individuals during the period of lockdown, but there was also an increase in the total amount of currency in circulation within the local economy. Therefore, there were relatively many goods in circulation and a relatively limited number of goods available for sale; thus, prices increased dramatically. Although the pandemic is almost over, the financial effects of the pandemic will continue to be felt far into the future.

Rising Energy And Food Prices

Inflation around the world is driven largely by rising energy and food prices. Increased cost of fuel results in higher transportation of goods, which leads to higher costs for everything else produced and sold across the world.

As an example of this:

  • If oil prices increase so do transportation costs.
  • If transportation costs increase then all goods will cost more.
  • If all goods cost more in general, inflation will be higher.

Also, the international food supply has contracted due to climate change impacts, drought and other supply shortages, as well as export restrictions by some countries. Since everyone eats and travels to commute, this will be a major concern for virtually all households.

Supply Chain Problems Still Not Fully Fixed

If you remember, during COVID-19, the term “supply chain disruption” was prevalent. Ships were stuck at the docks, factories closed down, and there were limited quantities of raw materials.

Although the situation has improved somewhat, global supply chains are still experiencing disruptions.

Visualize a series of dominoes lined up; if one domino falls out of alignment, it will cause a chain reaction of dominoes falling. This is what happens on a global basis with trade — delays in one country can create increased costs for production or price increases worldwide.

This is one of the key reasons certain products, such as electronics, automobiles and even building materials, continue to be inflated in price within many parts of the world.

Interest Rates And Their Slow Effect

Central banks, like the Federal Reserve in the United States, use interest rates as a tool to control inflation. Raising interest rates makes it more expensive to borrow, so consumers may be less likely to take on debt. Thus, a decrease in consumer spending leads to lower demand for products and services resulting in less upward pressure on prices.

However, the response of the economy to any interest rate change is not instantaneous. It does not happen just because of a change in interest rates; it often takes several months or longer before any significant change can be seen in the rate of inflation.

This delay contributes to the feeling of frustration for consumers because they hear that inflation has been brought “under control,” yet they do not see this reflected in their everyday expenses.

Global Conflicts And Political Tensions

Wars and political conflict play a massive part in sustaining inflation because of disrupting trade routes, destroying infrastructure and creating uncertainty in the global marketplace when major export countries are at war, resulting in sets of important export goods (such as Oil, Wheat and Fertilizer).

The effect is:

  • International shortages
  • Increasing prices because of limited supply
  • Resulting in increasing inflation rates worldwide

As a result of the above, even if you are not involved with that particular country in a war, you will experience the effect through increases in import prices; therefore, the impact is still felt worldwide.

Why Prices Rarely Go Back Down

One frequent question asked by consumers is: “If inflation is slowing down, then why are prices remaining so high?” The short technical answer is inflation measures only how rapidly prices are rising; it does not measure how much they may be decreasing.

A drop in inflation from 8% to 4%- means that prices are still rising, but at a slower rate than before. Businesses are also conflicted about lowering their prices, as it will often create a negative impact on their revenue (due to both the loss of sales and causing customers to expect discounts in the future).

Traditionally, as a result, prices would frequently stabilize at a new higher price-level, which is why products rarely become less expensive than they were previously.

What This Means For Ordinary People

Ordinary citizens can expect:

  • Cost-of-living increases
  • Decrease in savings
  • Increased strain on family budgets

You could alter your spending behaviour by delaying large purchases, reducing non-essential expenditures, or looking for additional sources of income. Governments may provide temporary assistance via subsidies or tax credits, but long-term fixes to emerging markets must occur to stabilise the global supply chain, alleviate geopolitical issues and develop sound monetary policies all of which take time and cooperation between nations.

Conclusion

There are still many obstacles to total control of global inflation due to an accumulation of interrelated elements: the after-effect from the pandemic; increases in the cost of energy; interruptions in the supply chain; rising interest rates; and geopolitical conflict.

Thus, there are no “quick fixes” or single solutions for global inflation. Rather, it is a tangled knot that Readjustment requires time and patience as well as careful attention.

For now, what individuals can do is stay knowledgeable concerning finance, manage their money in a sensible manner, and prepare for continued fluctuations in pricing. Even though some stability in the future becomes feasible with inflation, the process toward acquiring stability is slow and unsteady.
